When the Romans built the Fosse Way from Lincolnshire to Devon – passing through the Norton Radstock area – Midsomer Norton already had a history which could be traced back to the Iron Age.
However, it was a thriving coal mining industry that put this small community on the map and led to rapid growth in the area. This was heightened with the building of canals and the new railway lines, making it possible to transport the coal to far distant places.
The coal mining industry has now disappeared but has been replaced by modern and successful businesses throughout the area.
Midsomer Norton is still a traditional market town within a very attractive area between the Roman city of Bath and the Mendip Hills, with the River Somer meandering its way through the High Street.
The town has a variety of shops to provide a pleasurable shopping experience. Many are independent specialist shops giving that ‘old fashioned’ service at very competitive prices and providing something a little different – individuality, choice and good bargains!
There is also a Farmers’ Market held on the first Saturday of every month in the Methodist Church on the High Street. It features stalls selling local meats, fish, fruit, vegetables, cheeses, organic quiches, salads and herbs.
Midsomer Norton has a number of primary and secondary schools and a further education college; these provide excellent learning opportunities for all ages. There are also churches catering for every denomination. A superb leisure centre with a large heated indoor swimming pool is located just off the High Street.
Midsomer Norton is the perfect place to live, providing its residents with a wealth of facilities plus the added charm of living in a thriving market town.
