Frome is a small historic market town set in the north east corner of unspoilt Somerset.

The settlement dates back to about 685 when St Adhelm, Bishop of Malmesbury, set up a mission centre on the banks of the River Frome. He founded a monastery there, dedicating it to St John the Baptist, and this later became the town we know today.

In the 14th century the cloth and woollen industry began in the town and by the end of the 17th century Frome had grown in status and prosperity. It was an important commercial centre with a population four times that of neighbouring Bath.

The cloth trade declined during the 19th century due to competition from the north, eventually ceasing altogether around 1960. However printing took over in Frome – and flourished – but not to the extent of the cloth trade.

In recent years the town has developed as a focus for arts and crafts, and has a number of galleries and contemporary craft centres. Many professional craftspeople have workshops in Frome, specialities ranging from designer jewellery to textiles and musical instruments.

Frome today is an attractive town built on steep hills, with many well preserved listed buildings. Residents and visitors enjoy a wealth of facilities, from excellent schools, leisure centres and libraries, to high street shops, supermarkets and entertainment centres.
