When Romans built the Fosse Way from Lincolnshire to Devon, passing through the Norton Radstock area – Midsomer Norton already had a history that could be traced back to the Iron Age.However, it was a thriving coal mining industry that really put this small community on the map and led to rapid growth in the area. This was heightened with the building of canals and the new railway lines, making it possible to transport the coal to far distant places.
The coal mining industry has now disappeared, but has been replaced by modern and successful businesses throughout Norton Radstock.
Midsomer Norton still retains its stature as a traditional market town, nestling in the picturesque area between the Roman city of Bath and the Mendip Hills, with the River Somer meandering through the High Street.
